An inductive typology of egocentric networks

چکیده
We apply Random Forests to detailed survey data of social relations in order to derive an inductive typology of egocentric networks. Beginning with over 40 descriptors of 1050 northern California respondents’ networks, we combine 21 of these into seven dimensions, the extent to which those networks display: (1) interaction with nonkin, (2) proximity to kin, (3) overall involvement with kin (including support), (4) support from nonkin, and the extent to which (5) church, (6) work and (7) extra-curricular activities

A Typology of Supervisor Written Feedback on L2 Students’ Theses/Dissertations
The present study aimed at providing a typology of Iranian supervisors’ written feedback on L2 graduate students’ theses/dissertations and examining the way different speech functions are employed to put the supervisors’ thoughts and feelings into words. In so doing, a corpus of comments, including 15,198 comments provided on 87 TEFL theses and dissertations by 30 supervisors were analyzed. We ...
متن کاملPostural Adaptation of the Spatial Reference Frames to Microgravity: Back to the Egocentric Reference Frame
BACKGROUND In order to test how gravitational information would affect the choice of stable reference frame used to control posture and voluntary movement, we have analysed the forearm stabilisation during sit to stand movement under microgravity condition obtained during parabolic flights. In this study, we hypothesised that in response to the transient loss of graviceptive information, the po...
متن کاملEgocentric and sociocentric measures of network centrality
Egocentric centrality measures (for data on a node’s first-order zone) parallel to Freeman’s [Social Networks 1 (1979) 215] centrality measures for complete (sociocentric) network data are considered. Degree-based centrality is in principle identical for egocentric and sociocentric network data. A closeness measure is uninformative for egocentric data, since all geodesic distances from ego to o...

The present study aimed to perform the typology of obese people’s attitude to life and their decision-making for bariatric cosmetic surgery. The researcher selected an inductive approach to answer the questions of this study. Phenomenological method as the main method of the study with semi-structured interview technique helped the researcher collect data. The population included those who had ...
متن کاملDemonstratives, Frames of Reference, and Semantic Universals of Space
There is a large body of research indicating that speakers of (familiar) European languages tend to encode and conceptualize space from an egocentric perspective, but linguistic fieldworkers have shown that speakers of certain other languages (e.g. Tzeltal) often describe the same spatial scenes based on fixed coordinates of the environment. This has led some researcher to challenge longstandin...
